The surah starts by taking note of the ongoing thrashing of the Byzantines by the Persians at the Battle of Antioch. This destruction represented a noteworthy philosophical and sociological issue for the early Muslim people group in light of the fact that the Byzantines were Christians and considered monotheists while the express that vanquished them were viewed as dualists on the grounds that the official religion was Zoroastrianism. The surah is to a limited extent a reaction to the non-Muslim Meccans, who accepting this triumph as a sign that the customary polytheistic practices would prevail upon monotheism.[4] In the third and fourth ayatayn, the Muslim people group is guaranteed that the Byzantines will switch their thrashing into a triumph "in a couple of years' time".[5]
