 Muḥammad ʕali aṣ-Ṣabūni distinguishes the three focal issues of the surah as:

The station of the People of the Book according to Muhammad's message

The subject of earnest commitment to God

The destiny of the cheerful and the pitiable in the hereafter[1]:586

The sūrah opens by talking about the People of the Book and the polytheists (see additionally Religion in pre-Islamic Arabia) who doubted, expressing that they would possibly leave off their incredulity when given an unmistakable proof or confirmation (بيّنة bayyinah): a flag-bearer (رسول rasūl) presenting "purged sacred writings" (صحف مطهّرة ṣuḥuf muṭahharah) (Quran 98:1–3).
